How you’ll make a difference

As an Employability and Skills Mentor, you will play a vital role in supporting young people aged 13-16, predominately within an educational context, who have been identified as being at risk of NEET get ready for a post-16 destination. Acting as the link between internal and external teams and services, you will help some of our more vulnerable young people achieve and make positive outcomes and transitions.

What you will be doing

  • It will be your responsibility to develop a personal action plan and identify suitable career pathways and learning programmes for those using our service.
  • Regularly, you will support young people to overcome their barriers and, where appropriate, refer them to further progression opportunities that will provide additional wrap-around support.
  • Working in partnership with schools, colleges, local authority teams, employers and specialist providers, you will identify educational and/or employment pathways for young people identified as being ‘at risk of NEET’.
  • It will be key for you to provide additional support for exam readiness and where appropriate, be available on exam results day to offer further information, advice and guidance.
  • You will accurately maintain and update records to help inform practice and improve outcomes. 

What we need from you

  • You must have a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grade 4 or above) or equivalent qualification, including English and maths.
  • It is essential for you to have previous experience working with young people and a strong knowledge of the barriers they may face within an educational context.
  • Ideally, you will have an IAG, youth work, or teaching qualification, or be willing to undertake further training.

What you need to know

  • This is a limited term contract from 1st October 2025 – 30th September 2026.
  • Salary is pro-rata to hours worked. 
  • This role is predominately school based across the whole of South Gloucestershire, with an additional hybrid mixture of working at our office in Yate, from home, and occasionally from other local community venues. 
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role, it is a requirement of employment that a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained. 
  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle, or have an alternative means of travel.  

 

Interviews will be held on 8th September 2025.
