The Science Authority for Radiation Protection and Regulatory Science (RPRS) sits under the AWE Chief Scientist (CS) organisation.
The role develops and maintains the high-level strategy for work in the area of RPRS and works across AWE and with external partners to ensure the delivery of that strategy. In particular, this strategy will address how AWE maintains and enhances the necessary capabilities and procedures to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to radiation protection and regulatory science by AWE and its wider defence and national security customers.
This role is responsible for developing and maintaining the high-level strategy for RPRS, working across AWE and with external partners to ensure its successful delivery. The strategy focuses on maintaining and enhancing the capabilities and procedures required to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to radiation protection and regulatory science-both for AWE and its wider defence and national security customers.
Key Responsibilities:

Assuring standards in the work carried out in this area and the governance and arbitration of key technical decisions relating to RPRS. This includes the management of an appropriate structure within the CS’s overall governance structure for the area of RPRS.

Developing innovative approaches for the delivery of RPRS at AWE and to support tackling the resourcing challenges in this critical area.

Apply subject matter expertise in the area of RPRS to help solve challenging technical and business problems, taking account of the broader constraints, risks & opportunities facing AWE whilst championing the needs of RPRS.

Ensure that AWE is maintaining RPRS compliance across its facilities and operations.

The role provides, in consultation with appropriate technical authorities, authoritative advice and guidance to Design Authorities, CS, Chief Engineer, AWE Executive and Chief Executive Officer on the topic of RPRS.
Who are we looking for?
The SA for RPRS identifies and interprets customers’ requirements for radiation protection and regulatory science services and sponsors the long-term development and maintenance of these capabilities within AWE. This includes maintaining an appropriate forum in which strategic decisions regarding radiation protection and regulatory science capability can be presented, discussed and reviewed by all relevant stakeholders.
We would welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate knowledge or experience in several of the following:

Excellent understanding of regulatory requirements applicable to AWE.

Expertise in shaping regulatory approaches within a complex organisation.

Proven ability to influence stakeholders and contribute to policy direction.

Extensive experience of working in radiation protection, health physics, radiological metrology andor dosimetry.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.

Experience leading technical specialists and cross-disciplinary teams to achieve project goals and objectives.

Critical thinking, with strong numerical and data analysis skills, and the ability to summarise and critique complex documents.
In addition, it would be desirable for candidates to have the following:

Detailed understanding of information resources and technical literature relevant to Criticality Safety.

Fellowship of a relevant professional body
The requirement of this post will also require the successful applicant to undertake some travel across the UK and abroad if required.

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.
