Research Assistant (ED13057) – Bath, BA2 7AY

We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant to join the International Study Centre (ISC) for the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS), a major global research programme based here at the University of Bath.

About the role

In this role, you will be an integral part of a team investigating how young people are prepared to become citizens in societies worldwide. 

You will contribute to meaningful research that influences educational policy and practice across more than 25 countries.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting advanced quantitative analysis on international large-scale datasets such as ICCS, using statistical techniques such as Item Response Theory (IRT) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) with software including R, Mplus, and Python.
  • Contributing to academic publications, from literature reviews and developing research instruments to drafting content for technical reports and peer-reviewed papers.
  • Supporting project coordination for this large-scale international study, which includes liaising with collaborators and assisting with the organisation of expert meetings and workshops.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career researcher to develop specialist skills in large-scale data analysis and contribute to high-profile international publications.

About you

Our ideal candidate will be passionate about contributing to large-scale research in civic and citizenship education and will enjoy working collaboratively within a diverse international team.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g., Education, Psychology, Social Sciences, Statistics), a master’s level qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A strong foundation in quantitative research methods and skills in advanced statistical analysis such as Item Response Theory (IRT) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM).
  • Practical experience analysing international large-scale assessments with statistical software packages such as R, Mplus, Python, or similar.
  • The ability to manage your own workload effectively, work independently to meet deadlines, and be a supportive team member.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly in writing and to collaborate with a wide range of people.
  • Previous relevant work or research experience.

This is a part-time (18.25 hours per week), fixed-term position expected to end 30 June 2029.
