About the role:

As a Senior BI Developer, you will work with the Microsoft BI technology stack to develop and maintain King’s College London’s Business Intelligence infrastructure in Azure & Fabric. The role works across a range of data domains including students, research, staff, finance and estates.
As a Senior BI Developer, you will create and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines, design and build data models, optimise data processing and align deliverables with business priorities. You will work collaborative with other developers in an agile environment and provide coaching and/or mentoring to junior colleagues.
 
Business Intelligence Development
As a Senior BI Developer, the role holder will:
  • Co-ordinate the team’s forward workplan outside of formal development/project work
  • Act as a point of escalation for others in the team as and when issues are encountered, whether technical or non-technical in nature
  • Fulfil the lead developer role around larger and more complex discovery phases
  • Contribute to long term roadmaps aligned to Department’s strategy and architecture
 
As part of the Developer Team, the role holder will:
  • Build and maintain King’s College London’s Business Intelligence infrastructure working with the Microsoft BI technology stack.
  • Be part of project teams using an agile approach to deliver developments to the BI infrastructure.
  • Be confident in data wrangling, e.g. extracting, transforming, and combining data from a range of internal and external data sources.
  • Work with stakeholders at all levels from across the institution to understand and deliver their requirements using the BEAM methodology
  • Undertake Data Modelling and Data Architecture
 
Business Intelligence Tools
The role holder will work with:
  • Data Analytics stack (IS)
  • SQL Server (T-SQL and DBA)
  • Fabric (Power BI, Notebooks, Pipelines, Warehouses, Lakehouses etc)
  • Azure Data Lake
  • Azure DevOps
  • Azure Virtual Machines
 
Collaboration
As a Senior BI Developer, the role holder will:
  • Act as the main point of contact for key internal and external stakeholders
  • Align deliverables with business priorities to ensure timely, high-quality outcomes
  • Represent the developer team, and Analytics more generally, in relevant forums
 
As part of the developer team, the role holder will:
  • Collaborate on business intelligence projects.
  • Work with external partners to develop business intelligence solutions.
  • Work with stakeholders to understand their requirements and SME to understand the source data.
  • Play an active role in supporting and developing relevant professional networks within the university, including the Data Network 
  • Engage with relevant external networks to stay abreast of developments and emergent issues within the sector.
 
Other duties
As a Senior BI Developer, the role holder will:
  • Take the lead in supporting the induction of new members of the team, acting as a mentor and/or coach in the medium to longer term
  • Play a leading role in the training and development of other staff at King’s with relevant business intelligence tools
 
As part of the developer team, the role holder will:
Support the core remit of the Analytics team to co-ordinate the delivery of business intelligence across King’s College London.
 
This is a full time (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite  contract

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:
 
Essential criteria
1.      Extensive knowledge and experience with Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data services 
2.      Advanced data modelling skills with ability to design scalable models with architectural consistency 
3.      Expert at ETL/ELT design and implementation using Fabric & Azure tools 
4.      Strong command of SQL for querying, transformation and performance tuning  
5.      Expert at translating business requirements into technical solutions  
6.      Experience of working collaborative with data engineers, scientists and analysts 
7.      Experience of guiding junior developers, upholding architectural consistency, code quality and promoting best practice 
8.      Experience of working in an agile hybrid environment
 
Desirable criteria
1.      Familiarity with PySpark, KQL (Kusto Query Language), and Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps). 
2.      Certified Microsoft Professional  
3.      Knowledge and experience of using ADO/DevOps  
4.      Knowledge of additional programming languages e.g. Powershell, Python, C#, DAX, M, PowerFx 
5.      Knowledge of Higher Education Sector
